Audubon Elementary School Positive Behavior Interventions and supports

 A General Overview

Audubon Elementary School supports a school-wide program based on the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework.

School-wide PBIS is a research-based framework that has been proven to improve school climate, reduce problem behavior, and increase academic instructional time in schools (for additional information go to www.pbis.org). Two primary areas of emphasis in PBIS are prevention and instruction of social behavior. PBIS is based on the idea that when students are taught clearly defined behavioral expectations and provided with predictable responses to their behavior, both positive and corrective, all students are more likely to meet those expectations.

PLAYWORKS-Play and recess to support social-emotional learning

Playworks's mission is to improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play.  When recess is a healthy, integral part of the school day, kids carry that positive experience with them beyond the playground.

This year by the support of the Audubon PTA we began a partnership with PLAYWORKS-a Non-profit organization made up of coaches, kids, teachers, parents and supporters who believe in the power of play.  Playworks motto is on the playground, everyone plays, everyone belongs, and everyone contributes to the game.

Our Playworks site coach Jake joins Audubon one week per month.  During the times he is at Audubon he works with our PE/PMT teachers, trains 4th and 5th grade student coaches, teaches Playworks games to students in small groups, and with the input of students develops school rules and Game of the Week to the ensure that everyone plays.

On our playgrounds kids will become leaders.  They will run their own games and settle their disputes quickly (rock-paper-scissors is the problem solver)  because getting along is more fun than fighting.

Through Playworks-Coaches, teachers, staff and parents encourage kids to bring out the best in themselves and each other.  Audubon students learn the value of fair healthy play, compassion and respect.
